Recipe - Lobia/Black eyed Beans Curry

 Lobia/Black eyed Beans Curry

The black-eyed pea or black-eyed bean, a legume which is very high in protein content. Including these beans to your meal can make a nutritious meal. It can be enjoyed with rice or chapati as well. I like to make it a little spicy with a nice gravy of onion and tomatoes.

  • 1 - Cup lobia
  • 1 - Green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 - Medium onion chopped
  • 2 - Small tomatoes chopped
  •  1 tsp. - Ginger-garlic paste
  •  1- Pinch heeng/asafetida
  •  ¼ tsp. - cumin seeds
  •  1/2 tsp. - Mustard seeds
  •  1/4 tsp. - Turmeric
  •  1 tsp. - Red chili powder
  •  1 tbsp. -. Coriander powder
  •  1 tsp. - Garam masala
  •  Fresh coriander leaves to garnish
  •  Salt to taste
  •  2 tbsp. oil

  • Wash and soak Lobia/Black eyed Beans in 4 cups of water overnight or for minimum 4-5 hours.
  • To cook/boil the Lobia beans can use pot or a pressure cooker with a pinch of salt and turmeric powder until soft, set them aside
  • Now heat oil in a pan and asafetida then mustard seeds then cumin seeds let them crackle add chopped green chili
  • Add chopped onions saute for few minutes till soft then add ginger-garlic paste mix well and let fry, add chopped tomatoes then add all the spices and salt except garam masala
  • Cook the tomatoes till oil separates from the corners, when cooked add lobia beans mix well then add some water and to adjust the consistency as per your requirement, add garam masala mix well
