Biotechnology Industry in India

The Indian biotechnology sector is one of the fastest growing knowledge-based sectors in India and is expected to play a key role in shaping India's rapidly developing economy in the future. With numerous comparative advantages in terms of research and development (R&D) facilities, knowledge, skills, and cost effectiveness, the biotechnology industry in India has immense potential to emerge as a global key player. Some companies already enjoy a status of being unique and world wide suppliers for certain pharmaceutical products. India is ranked among the top 12 biotech destinations worldwide and third largest in the Asia-Pacific region.

Key segments in the Indian biotechnology industry:

    Bio-pharma

    Bio-services

    Bio-agri

    Bio-industrial

    Bio-informatics

Biotechnology Companies are firms that are involved in what one United Nations committee defined as, "Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use." Studying and researching on microbiological processes and using these for betterment of humankind is objective of biotechnology.

India is a breeding ground of biotechnology based research. With an ever increasing number of 400+ 400 Biotechnology companies in India there is lot of scope to pursue study and career in the field. The scope and potential of biotechnology

Global Impact of Biotechnology

In recent years revolution in biology has occurred with increasing potential and resourcefullness in research opportunities. Techniques have been developed to extract rare and medicinally valuable molecules, to change hereditary traits of plants and animals, to diagnose diseases to produce useful chemicals and, to clean up and restore the environment. Biotechnology thus is having great impact in the fields of health, food/agriculture and environmental protection. In present situation the differentiating line in pharmaceutical firms and biotechnology is constantly eliminating.

BioTechnology Careers

When most people think of opportunities for careers in biotechnology, they think of a scientist in a white coat in a laboratory developing drugs to improve the quality of life. However, biotechnology has a wide variety of career opportunities in almost of all the functions required to run an organization including finance, sales and marketing, research and development, to manufacturing and quality control and assurance.

Careers in Biotechnology Research

Researchers in agriculture, biology, genetics, and medicine are at the forefront of new biotechnology discoveries to unravel the genetic codes that govern the biological processes of different forms of life and their applications in betterment.

Careers in Producing Biotechnology Products

After a biotechnology product has been approved for use, many people are needed to manufacture it. Individuals are needed to manage and direct the manufacturing process, to ensure quality control, and to engineer the systems needed to manufacture the product. A biotechnology company offers many of the same career opportunities as any other manufacturing business. However, in addition to specific skills in engineering, scale up, quality control, and other manufacturing processes, individuals employed in the biotechnology industry will need a solid background in the biological sciences.
